Thank you for making contact.
After over 20 years service with the London Assembly I stood down on 6th May 2021.
I began work on the Assembly in 2000, initially as a List member. From 2004 onwards I was the member for North East London, serving the London Boroughs of Hackney, Islington and Waltham Forest. I also assumed the role of Chair of the Assembly for six terms.
Re-establishing London-wide government has been a crucial part of restoring London as a world city and I have been privileged to have been partof that process.
As well as scrutinizing the work of the successive Mayors I was also able to help bring the 2012 Olympics to London; secure (national) legislation tocontrol smoking in public places; establish local accountability for the work of the Metropolitan Police Service; and ensure improved provision for SEND children became a key priority for the GLA.
The core of the work was always with my constituents. I want to thank them all for giving me the opportunity to be part of their lives and for having faith inme to deliver for them in North East London. Together, we have secured continuing improvements in transport services, the renewal of local estates and have been unrelenting in our work to reduce air pollution and protect the health of Londoners.
I have also tried to be a champion for younger people, opening up City Hall to them and mentoring young people especially women and people from BAME heritage.
I would also like to thank Labour Party activists from all over the constituency for their help in securing successive election victories, resulting in a majority in 2016 of 101,774.
I have tried to be fearless in my work, representing those without voices, challenging those with power to ensurethey deliver. I hope I am leaving the constituency and indeed the Assembly as a whole, in a stronger place and I wish everyone every success for the future.
With much love
