I was saddened to hear of the closure of the Mecca Bingo hall on Hackney Road. For over 50 years this venue has provided many in the community of a friendly, welcoming place where they can go to meet friends and have fun in a safe environment.
As was reported in local newspapers, the bingo hall was a place where people of all ages could feel comfortable, and a fantastic demonstration of just how essential such community bases are. It is great shame that Mecca have decided to terminate their lease of the building early.
Whatever new development replaces the bingo hall should ensure that the community spirit that the bingo hall fostered remains, and that local people feel the benefit.
